Barlow's Boys and Girls team got their 2006 season underway Wednesday evening with a successful performance against Tualatin and Lake Oswego in a non-scored pre-season meet at Tualatin.
In the modified format meet the 400 meter dash, the 800 meter run, and the 3000 meter run were not contested, but a 4x800 meter relay was added. Of the fifteen events, the Bruin boys finished first in eight events, while the girls led the way in five events. If the meet had been scored Barlow's boys would have outscored Tualatin 83-33 and Lake Oswego 82-35. The Bruin girls would have outscored Tualatin 60-57 and Lake Oswego 80-35. Because of the informal nature of the meet many key athletes stayed on the sidelines for all three teams due to injury, illness, or the need for more practice and conditioning.
Most impressive for the defending Mt. Hood Conference Champion Bruins was the boys 4x100 relay team, who won in 43.84c seconds despite a badly botched third exchange. A clocking that fast this early in the season already establishes Barlow as a state contender in that event. Sophomore Kevin Cook, Junior Jerell Ramos, Senior Tommi Houvinen, and Sophomore Eric Capelle outpaced a strong Tualatin relay by approximiately .6 of a second.
Capelle was Barlow's only double event winner on the boys team, taking the top prize in both hurdle races. He nearly matched his best times from the 2005 season winning the 110 hurdles in 15.84c, and the 300 hurdles in 41.94c.
Other winners for the Barlow boys team included Jerell Ramos in the 100 meters (11.74c), junior Markus Stevens in the high jump (5-10), senior Jeff Hunt in the Javelin (164-0), and sophomore Brett McNutt in the discus (119-7). Also winning for Barlow was the 4x800 relay team, made up of sophomore Nathan Hope, sophomore Grant Bateman, senior Charlie Newton, and senior Shawn Fisher.
Senior Angie Otteson was Barlow's only double winner on the girls side, capturing the 100 meter hurdles (18.64c) and the 300 meter hurdles (52.14c).
Other female Bruin winners were senior Greta Gustafson in the discus (118-4), freshman Natalie Gardner in the high jump (5-0), and junior Danielle Ferguson in the triple jump (32-6.5).
Barlow gets league action underway this week with a home dual meet against the Broncos of Parkrose Wednesday afternoon.

Barlow's State Champion: Sam Michener
Barlow superstar Sam Michener swept the sprint races at the OSAA 4A State meet
in Eugene May 21 becoming Barlow's first ever state champion in the the 100
meter dash and 200 meter dash.
Michener gave fans, teammates and coaches some concern on Friday in the
prelims when he came out of the blocks poorly and finished second in a subpar
11.20a. The race was good enough to put him in the finals where he was placed
in lane 2. To his right were rival Nathan Ingrao from Sandy in lane 3 and
Tualatin's Kevin Dickson, the fastest prelim qualifier (11.02a) in lane 4.
In the finals of the 100 Michener again got off to a poor start and was a step
behind Dickson, Ingrao and a pair of Summit runners early in the race.
Halfway through the race he was gaining but it didn't look like he'd be able to catch the leaders.
He continued his drive to the finish line, finally catching Dickson right
before the line.
His winning time of 10.87a was just .02 ahead of Dickson and all of the top
five finishers were within .14 of each other.
In the 200 Sam was more in control of the event from the start. He breezed to
a 22.15a victory while running in the rain in the prelims, earning him lane 4
for the finals.
When the gun went off in the finals he blasted out of the blocks alertly and
quickly made up the stagger on Lane 5. Jesuit's Seth Tarver also had a good
start but Michener ran past him 2/3rds of the way through the turn, then sped
away and won by a comfortable and impressive margin of .37 of a second.
His winning time of 21.76a was a lifetime best (and another school record)
despite less-than-ideal conditions for running fast. There was no tailwind,
very light rain and the temperature was moderate.
Barlow's Javelin Stars: Bryce Johnson and Ali Mumford
Barlow's two senior javelin stars had great performances at the OSAA 4A State Meet in Eugene with lifetime best performances in their final meet as Bruins.
Johnson improved his PR to 181 feet 8 inches and finished in ninth place. His mark puts him at No. 10 on Barlow's all-time record list, but at No. 2 since the javelin specifications were changed to make it a little bit harder to throw far.
Ali broke her lifetime best throw with a 131-3 toss on her final throw of the prelims, then improved again on her last throw in the finals let loose with a 131-10 throw. She finished in fourth place despite going into even seeded No. 15.
She ends her high school career with the No. 6 throw on Barlow's all-time record list.
